“Make a Beautiful World Filled With Wisdom and Mercy”- Suwon Lanterns Festival
To celebrate the Buddha’s Birthday on May 22nd, Suwon held “Suwon Lanterns Festival” around the Hwaseong Fortress on May 19th. The theme of the festival was to widely spread the wisdom and mercy by the Buddha to make a beautiful world. Many booths were run by different temples during afternoon. One of the temple called Youga 심인당 opened a booth decorating fans with traditional Korean paper, face-painting and handed out balloons. Buddhist monks from Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand came to participate at the festival too.
When the sun went down, many believers in Buddhism, monks and even regular citizens who wanted to participate in the line of lantern parade started to light up their lights. The road was closed starting from Paldalmun Gate to Janganmun Gate for 3 hours from 7 pm. The lanterns symbolizing Buddhism were absolutely beautiful and many people came to watch the parade. It was definitely one of the biggest Suwon’s festivals held this year. The festival was ended by sending a message to make a world having more wisdom and mercy. The festival seemed to be saying to all of the people to be happy regardless of the religion they have.
