Exploring Suwon with International Students: The Charm and Flavor of Suwon

On May 18, Suwon City¡¯s Public Diplomacy Team held the first session of the local understanding program for international students. This program aimed to introduce international students to the history and culture of Suwon and to enhance their understanding of the local community.

The first event was a tour of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, one of Suwon's proudest landmarks. Built by King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty, Suwon Hwaseong is a UNESCO World Heritage site, renowned for its historical significance and beauty. The international students walked along the magnificent fortress walls, experiencing the architectural techniques and history of the Joseon Dynasty firsthand. They also toured Hwaseong Haenggung, the symbol of the fortress, gaining insight into King Jeongjo¡¯s benevolent rule and the culture of that era. At Yeonmudae, they participated in archery, an activity rarely encountered in daily life, which they all enjoyed together.

Next, they explored Haenggung-dong, where the traditional and modern aspects of Suwon coexist. Haenggung-dong is filled with unique cafes and restaurants that particularly appeal to the international students. Strolling through the narrow alleys, they admired the harmonious blend of Suwon's historical appearance and modern charm.

The final activity was a hands-on experience of making makgeolli, a traditional Korean rice wine. Under the guidance of a traditional liquor expert, the students made makgeolli themselves, learning about Korea's traditional liquor culture. By mixing rice and yeast and observing the fermentation process, they appreciated the dedication and effort of Koreans. They also tasted the makgeolli they made, enjoying the traditional Korean flavor. Sharing their experiences with each other, the students deepened their understanding and interest in Korean culture.

This Suwon exploration program provided international students with a valuable opportunity to experience the charm and flavor of Suwon. We will continue to offer such programs to help international students adapt to the local community and gain a deeper understanding of Korean culture.
