Discovering Suwon: A City of Tradition and Innovation - 2024 Suwon International Student Program

On May 18, 2024, the '2024 Suwon Regional Understanding Program' was held with the participation of 80 international students and 19 members of SCVA.

This program was designed to introduce international students studying at universities in Suwon to the diverse charms of the city and to offer them an opportunity to experience Korean traditional culture. Participants could choose from four themes: 'The Art of Suwon,' 'The Fragrance of Suwon,' 'The Tradition of Suwon,' and 'The Style and Taste of Suwon.‘

The event began with an opening ceremony at the Paldal Cultural Center. The ceremony featured useful tips for living in Suwon provided by SCVA and ice-breaking activities, creating a lively and engaging atmosphere. This was followed by a tour of Hwaseong Haenggung Palace with an English cultural guide, allowing participants to experience the beauty and history of Suwon's iconic palace. For lunch, we enjoyed 'Jeongjo Noodles' at 'Susuhanga' in Haenggung-dong, a dish favored by King Jeongjo.

In the afternoon, the 'Art of Suwon' team visited the Suwon Museum of Art to explore the city's tradition and transformation through various artworks. Later, we moved to the Samsung Innovation Museum for an English docent tour. Here, we learned about Samsung's corporate philosophy and its history of challenges and innovations, gaining insight into one of South Korea's most renowned companies.

The final part of the program was a traditional fan painting workshop at Ilwol Workshop. Participants painted traditional Korean folk art on fans, creating unique souvenirs and gaining hands-on experience with Korean traditional culture.

The '2024 Suwon Regional Understanding Program' provided international students with a valuable opportunity to discover the multifaceted attractions of Suwon and to deepen their understanding of Korean culture. We hope that such programs will continue to offer international students the chance to connect more closely with Korea and Suwon in the future.

전통과 혁신의 도시, 수원을 만나다: 2024 수원시 유학생 지역이해 프로그램

2024년 5월 18일, 유학생 80명과 수원시 공공외교단 19명이 함께한 ‘2024 수원시 지역이해 프로그램’이 성황리에 개최되었습니다.

이번 프로그램은 수원에 있는 대학에 재학 중인 유학생들을 대상으로 수원의 다양한 매력을 탐방하고, 한국 전통문화를 경험할 수 있도록 기획되었습니다. 참가자들은 ‘수원의 예술’, ‘수원의 향기’, ‘수원의 전통’, ‘수원의 멋과 맛’ 등 4가지 부문 중 하나를 선택하여 활동에 참여했습니다.

행사는 수원 팔달문화센터에서의 개회식으로 시작되었습니다. 개회식에서는 수원시 공공외교단이 유학생들을 위해 준비한 수원 생활 꿀팁 소개와 아이스 브레이킹 활동이 진행되어 분위기를 한층 밝게 만들었습니다. 이어서 영어 문화해설사와 함께하는 화성행궁 투어가 진행되어, 수원의 아름다운 행궁을 둘러보며 수원의 역사와 문화를 생생하게 체험할 수 있었습니다. 점심은 행궁동에 위치한 ‘수수한가’에서 정조 임금님이 즐겨 드셨던 ‘정조 국수’를 맛보았습니다.

‘수원의 예술’ 팀은 오후에 수원 시립미술관을 방문하여, 수원의 전통과 변화를 예술 작품을 통해 알아보는 시간을 가졌습니다. 이후, 삼성이노베이션 뮤지엄으로 이동해 영어 도슨트 투어에 참여했습니다. 이곳에서 삼성의 기업 철학과 도전, 혁신의 역사를 살펴보며 대한민국을 대표하는 기업의 발자취를 느낄 수 있었습니다.

프로그램의 마지막 단계는 일월공방에서 진행된 부채 전통 민화 그리기 체험이었습니다. 참가자들은 부채에 한국의 전통 민화를 그리며 한국의 전통문화를 직접 체험하고, 자신만의 특별한 기념품을 만들었습니다.

이번 ‘2024 수원시 지역이해 프로그램’은 유학생들에게 수원의 다채로운 매력을 알리고, 한국 문화를 깊이 있게 이해할 수 있는 소중한 기회를 제공한 시간이었습니다. 이번 기회로 많은 유학생이 한국과 수원을 더욱 가까이 느낄 수 있기를 기대합니다.
