The Beauty and Taste of Suwon: A Cultural Experience Program with Foreigners

On May 18th, as the 11th official activity of the SCVA, we conducted our first official event. This event, part of the Suwon City Foreign Resident Cultural Awareness Program, provided a deep understanding of the history and culture of Suwon Hwaseong, along with various experiences of Korean traditional culture.

I participated in the team for "The Beauty and Taste of Suwon". Foreign friends from various countries, such as India, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Rwanda, and Pakistan, joined our team. Our activities included exploring Suwon Hwaseong and participating in a makgeolli (Korean traditional rice wine) making experience.

The first part of our program was a walking tour of the Suwon Hwaseong Castle Road. Starting from Hwaseomun (화서문), we visited Janganmun (장안문), Hwahongmun (화홍문), Banghwasuryujeong (방화수류정), and finally Yeonmudae (연무대). At each location, members of the SCVA provided English explanations about the historical significance and architectural features of Suwon Hwaseong. After the walking tour, we experienced a traditional archery (gukgung) session at Yeonmudae (연무대).

The Gukgung experience offered a unique opportunity for our foreign friends to try traditional Korean archery. Although it was a new and unfamiliar activity for them, many of them impressively hit the targets. I also tried it once and realized that hitting the target from a distance was not as easy as it looked.

Afterwards, we took the Hwaseong Tourist Trolley and enjoyed the scenery of Suwon Hwaseong. After this, we moved to the next activity location for the makgeolli-making experience.

The final part of our program was the makgeolli-making experience, conducted at Jasaengjeonsul (재생전술). Through this program, we received a basic lecture on the definition and history of traditional Suwon makgeolli, and we had the chance to make our own makgeolli. There was also a tasting session for various types of makgeolli, which revitalized our participants. It was delightful to see our foreign friends enthusiastically tasting and enjoying the makgeolli. At the end of the experience, we were able to take home the makgeolli we made ourselves.

Through this program, many foreigners were able to deeply understand and experience Korean history and culture. Personally, I had a meaningful and enjoyable time trying activities like makgeolli making and traditional archery that I hadn't experienced before. Despite the hot weather, the active participation and enthusiasm of our foreign friends made it a fulfilling experience for us.

수원의 멋과 맛: 외국인과 함께한 문화 체험 프로그램

지난 5월 18일, 수원시 공공외교단 11기로 공식 활동을 진행했습니다. 첫 번째 공식 활동은 수원시 외국인 지역 이해 프로그램으로, 수원화성의 역사와 문화를 깊이 이해할 기회를 제공했으며, 다양한 체험을 통해 한국 전통문화를 경험할 수 있었습니다.

제가 맡은 수원의 멋과 맛 팀의 경우, 인도, 베트남, 방글라데시, 르완다, 파키스탄 등 다양한 국적의 외국인 친구들과 함께했으며, 수원화성 탐방, 막걸리 빚기 체험으로 진행되었습니다.

프로그램의 첫 번째 일정은 수원화성 성곽길 걷기 투어였습니다. 화서문에서 시작해 장안문, 화홍문, 방화수류정, 그리고 연무대까지 각각의 장소에서 공공외교단이 각자 준비한 영어 해설을 통해 수원화성의 역사적 의미와 건물들의 특징에 대해 알아가는 시간을 가졌습니다. 걷기 투어를 마친 후에는 연무대에서 국궁 체험을 진행했습니다.

국궁 체험은 한국 전통 활쏘기를 직접 경험해볼 수 있는 기회로, 외국인 친구들에게는 다소 생소할 수 있는 경험이지만 다들 과녁에 잘 맞추는 모습들이 신기했었습니다.저 또한 한번 시도해 봤지만, 과녁까지의 거리가 멀어 활 쏘는 것이 마냥 쉬운 것이 아닌 것을 체험해 볼 수 있었습니다. 

이후 화성어차를 탑승해 수원화성의 경관을 편하게 관람할 수 있었으며, 하차 후 다음 체험인 막걸리 빚기 장소로 이동했습니다.

마지막 일정으로 재생전술 막걸리 빚기 체험을 진행했습니다. 해당 프로그램을 통해 수원 전통 막걸리의 정의와 역사 등 우리 술의 기초 강의를 들을 수 있었으며, 직접 막걸리도 빚어볼 수 있었습니다. 여러 종류의 막걸리를 시음하는 시간도 있었는데, 지쳤던 체력이 다시 활기찬 모습으로 시음하는 외국인 친구들의 모습이 인상 깊었습니다. 체험 후에는 직접 빚은 막걸리를 집으로 가져갈 수 있어서 좋았습니다.

이번 수원시 외국인 지역이해 프로그램을 통해 많은 외국인이 한국의 역사와 문화를 깊이 이해하고 체험할 수 있었습니다. 저 또한, 평소 접해보지 못한 막걸리 빚기 체험과 국궁 체험 등을 통해 재미있고 뜻깊은 시간을 보낼 수 있었습니다. 무더운 날씨였지만, 적극적으로 듣고 행사에 참여해 준 외국인 친구들 덕분에 뿌듯한 경험으로 남을 수 있었습니다.
