Understanding Suwon Through Tradition, 2024 Exploring Suwon for international students
On May 18th, the ¡®2024 Exploring Suwon for International students¡¯ organized by the Suwon Center for International Cooperation, took place. Eighty international students from four universities in and around Suwon gathered together for the event.
The students gathered in Suwon Paldal Culture Center, where the program started with a brief welcome speech from the center's director, followed by some explanations. Two members of the Suwon Center¡¯s Volunteer Activators then shared some useful tips about Suwon city. To help the students get to know each other, ice-breaking activities were done, including interesting activities like ¡®Guess the movie title¡¯ and ¡®Common sense quiz about countries all around the world¡¯. These activities allowed the students to quickly bond in a short period, and they participated with bright smiles.
After the orientation, the international students took a detailed tour of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress with a professional guide. They explored every corner of the fortress, collecting stamps along the way.
For lunch, the students could enjoy noodles and potato pancakes, experiencing the flavors of refined Korean cuisine. After the meal, the program continued with various activities based on the chosen themes. The ¡®2024 Exploring Suwon for International students¡¯ featured four themes: ¡®Art of Suwon¡¯, ¡®Scent of Suwon¡¯, ¡®Tradition of Suwon¡¯ and ¡®Beauty and Taste of Suwon¡¯.
Among these, ¡®Tradition of Suwon¡¯ theme allowed the students to once again experience the beauty of tradition they had seen at Suwon Hwaseong Fortress. The students dressed in traditional Hanbok and learned the proper way to bow, starting with the basic posture and progressing to formal bowing etiquettes. After learning how to show respect to others in a traditional way, the students watched a tea ceremony by an expert and even made traditional tea snack, Dasik to enjoy with the brewed tea. The students slowly savored the aroma of the tea and the taste of Dasik, and finished the lesson with the bows they had learned.
The final activity was ¡®Crafting Korean paper lanterns to accompany King Jeongjo¡¯. The students carefully chose Korean phrases and drawings to decorate their lanterns. Each student selected meaningful Korean phrases and colored the drawings with care. When the completed lanterns were lit up together, the students' faces also lit up with bright smiles.
