Connecting the world through movies: ASEAN Films screening event in Suwon

From October 26 to October 31, for three days, Suwon Center for International Cooperation and KF ASEAN Cultural Center hosted the event "ASEAN Films: Meeting the Present! in Suwon." The featured films were Vietnam's "Maika: The Girl From Another Galaxy" Cambodia's "Funan," and the Philippines' "Gensan Punch,".

Among them, the film that received the most praise from the audience was Cambodia's "Funan" The plot of this film is as follows: In 1975, during the Khmer Rouge revolution, families leading ordinary lives in Funan, Cambodia, are forcibly scattered. The protagonist, despite obstacles from the surroundings, takes risks to find his son. Directed by Dennis, a second-generation diaspora with a mother who sought asylum in France, the film is based on his mother's memories. It won the top prize at the Annecy International Animation Festival.

Through this event, the citizens of Suwon had the opportunity to appreciate unfamiliar ASEAN films, enhancing their interest and understanding of diverse cultural realms. 영화로 세계를 잇다... 아세안 영화 상영회 in 수원

10월 26부터 10월 31일 3일간 수원시국제교류센터와 KF아세안문화원은 ”아세안 영화, 현재를 만나다! in 수원“상영회를 개최하였다. 상영작은 베트남 <마이카 : 외계에서 온 소녀>, 캄보디아 <1975 킬링필드, 푸난>, 필리핀 <젠산펀치>. 총 3작품이다.

이중 가장 관람객의 호평을 받은 작품은 캄보디아 <1975 킬링필드, 푸난>이다. 이 작품의 줄거리는 다음과 같다. 1975년 크메르루주 혁명이 발생하고 캄보디아 프놈펜에서 평범한 삶을 살아온 가족들은 강제로 흩어지게 된다. 주인공은 주위의 방해에도 불구하고 아들을 찾기 위해 위험을 무릅쓰는 내용이다. 프랑스로 망명한 어머니를 둔 디아스포라 2세인 데니스 도 감독이 어머니의 기억을 바탕으로 제작한 영화다. 애니메이션의 오스카상으로 불리는 안시 국제애니메이션 페스티벌에서 대상을 수상한 작품이다. 이번 행사를 통해 수원시민들은 낯선 아세안 영화를 감상하며 다양한 문화권의 관심과 이해도를 제고할 수 있었다. 수원시국제교류센터에서는 수원시 국제 자매‘우호도시와의 협력사업, 수원시 거주 외국인 지원 사업, 국제교류 사업을 진행한다. 국제교류 활동에 관심이 있는 수원시민들은 수원시국제교류센터에 방문하면 행사 정보를 얻을 수 있다.
