Korean Culture Day, A Successful Online Event

The Suwon Center for International Cooperation organized and successfully completed "2020 First SWCIC Online Korean Culture Day" for foreigners who could not experience Korean culture due to the continued spread of the Corona virus. The event, which was held on Saturday, September 26, was led by the 7th Suwon International Cooperation Supporters SCVA and was conducted by recruiting foreigners living in Suwon in advance. The event consisted of about 30 foreigners residing in Suwon and various age groups and nationalities with the participation of Suwon International Cooperation Supporters.

This Korean Culture Day was held under the theme of "Suwon Hwaseong Fortress Assembly and Coloring Experience," and it was a time to listen to and experience Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, the pride of Suwon. The Suwon Hwaseong Fortress Assembly and Color Kit is the winner of the 2019 Suwon City Tourism Souvenir Contest and is a miniature of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress that all generations can enjoy together. There are Paldalmun, Janganmun, Seojangdae, Seobuk Gongsimdon and Hwahongmun Miniature Series, and DIY products that can be assembled, colored and enjoyed by themselves. It delivered 'Suwon Hwaseong Fortress Kit' to foreigners who wish to participate individually in advance and spent time assembling and coloring the Hwahongmun Kit with supporters through online video programs.

"We prepared the event in a non-face-to-face manner for foreigners who have fewer opportunities to experience the Corona 19," said an official at the Suwon Center for International Cooperation. "It will be a time for local and foreign residents to have safe cultural exchanges." In addition, the International Cooperation Supporters (SCVA), which organized the event and helped proceed, said, "It was the first event, so I was nervous, but I was able to finish the event safely thanks to the active participation of foreigners." She also said, "I'm sorry that I couldn't meet you directly, but I was able to talk and interact with foreigners enough through the online event, and I want to have more fun in the next event," and added, "I hope many foreigners will participate in the next event."

The SWCIC's Korean Culture Day, which has been held since 2014, is a program that helps foreigners living in Suwon understand the history and culture of Korea and Suwon and settle in Suwon. This year, a total of four Korean Culture Day days will be held through non-face-to-face programs using ZOOM, a remote video lecture program. The first event will be the Suwon Hwaseong Fortress assembly and coloring experience held on September 26, and the event will be held in turn under the theme of making embroidered hahoe mask key rings in October, making Korean paper lanterns embroidered with Suwoncheon Stream and autumn night sky in November, and finally, embroidery of the New Year in December and understanding the culture of Korea's bands. The October event will soon be posted on the website of the Suwon Center for International Cooperation to recruit participants.

In addition, Suwon Center for International Cooperation will host a variety of events including Korean language classes, movie nights, talk lounge and global humanities events as well as Korean Culture Day of Korean Culture. 수원시국제교류센터는 코로나 바이러스의 지속적인 확산으로 인해 한국 문화를 체험하지 못하는 외국인들을 위해 ‘2020년 제 1회 SWCIC 온라인 한국문화데이’를 마련하여 성공적으로 마쳤다. 지난 9월 26일 토요일에 열린 이 행사는 수원시국제교류 서포터즈 SCVA 7기가 주도하였으며, 수원에 거주하는 외국인을 미리 모집하여 진행하였다. 행사는 수원에 거주하고 있는 외국인 약 30명과 수원시국제교류 서포터즈의 참여로 다양한 연령대와 국적으로 구성되었다.

이번 한국문화데이는 ‘수원화성 조립·채색 체험’을 주제로 진행되었으며 수원의 자랑인 수원화성에 대한 소개를 듣고 체험할 수 있는 시간이었다. 수원화성 조립·채색 키트는 2019 수원시 관광기념품 공모전 당선작으로 모든 세대가 함께 즐길 수 있는 수원화성의 미니어처이다. 팔달문, 장안문, 서장대, 서북공심돈, 화홍문 미니어처 시리즈가 있으며 직접 조립하고 채색하며 즐길 수 있는 DIY 제품이다. 참여를 희망하는 외국인에게 개별적으로 ‘수원화성 키트’를 미리 전달하였으며 온라인 화상 프로그램을 통해 서포터즈와 함께 화홍문 키트를 조립하고 채색하는 시간을 보냈다.

수원시 국제교류센터 관계자는 “코로나19로 체험 기회가 적어진 외국인들을 위해 비대면 방식으로 행사를 준비했다”며 “수원시 내·외국인들이 안전하게 문화 교류를 할 수 있는 시간이 될 것”이라고 말했다. 또한 행사를 기획하고 진행에 도움을 준 국제교류서포터즈(SCVA)는 “첫 행사라 떨리고 긴장되어 서툰 부분이 있었지만 외국인들의 적극적인 참여로 무사히 행사를 마칠 수 있었다”고 밝혔다. 또한 ”직접 만나지 못해 아쉽지만 온라인 행사로도 충분히 외국인과 대화·교류할 수 있었으며 다음 행사는 더 재밌게 진행하고 싶다“며 ”다음 행사에도 많은 외국인들이 참여하기를 바란다“고 전했다. 

2014년부터 개최된 SWCIC의 한국문화데이는 수원시 거주 외국인들이 한국과 수원의 역사와 문화를 이해하고 수원에 정착하는 데 도움을 주는 프로그램이다. 올해는 원격 화상강의 프로그램 줌(ZOOM)을 활용한 비대면 방식으로 총 4번의 한국문화데이를 개최할 예정이다. 첫 행사는 지난 9월 26일에 개최한 수원화성 조립·채색 체험이며, 10월엔 자개공예 하회탈 키링 만들기 체험, 11월엔 수원천과 가을 밤하늘 수놓은 한지 등불 만들기, 마지막으로 12월엔 새해를 맞이하는 띠별 자수 놓기·한국의 띠 문화 이해를 주제로 차례대로 행사를 열 계획이다. 10월 행사는 국제교류센터 홈페이지에 곧 안내되어 행사 참여자를 모집할 예정이다.

또한 수원시 국제교류서포터즈는 한국문화데이뿐만 아니라 한국어 교실, 무비나잇, 토크라운지, 글로벌 인문학 행사 등 다양한 행사를 주관한다. 수원시에 거주하는 외국인과 한국인을 대상으로 열리는 행사이며 이와 같은 소식은 수원시 국제교류센터 홈페이지에서 확인 가능하다.
